FISHBONE
Fishbone lives up to their legend as THE group to
bridge the gap between the funk of George Clinton and
the blare of Rush; a hybrid fusion where Led Zeppelin
and Sly Stone dance to a frenetic ska beat that fuels
the alternative thrust of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Janes
Addiction and the cast of Lollapalooza. From their
childhood together in the hardcore South Central Los
Angeles wasteland to years of forced school-bused
integration, Fishbones influences were kaleidoscopic
and never-ending. The band was formed in 1979 in the
ghettos of South Central Los Angeles. The group came
from the same Los Angeles scene that spawned the Red
Hot Chili Peppers and Janes Addiction. Fishbone first
gained attention with their unique live concerts,
earning a reputation as one of the most original bands
in the alternative genre. Their unique stew of
different styles, mixed with hectic energy and
pounding rhythms, were a huge influence on the
funk/rock/metal/rap genre that would become popular in
the 1990s. Live audiences around the world have been
surrendering to the bands stage flash and magical
rhythms with uninterrupted regularity. Such passionate
devotion is not lost on Fishbone, who refer to their
friends on the road as The Familyhood.

I'm looking for a coffeehouse where some folks can meet to hang out and knit or crochet. Not a Starbuck's, a mom-and-pop place would be fine. It doesn't have to be a coffeehouse either actually, but casual enough to not have to be rented (except by price of a coffee).

Oakland/Berkeley preferred though as far south as Castro Valley would be considered.

Dear friends and family:

Beautiful spaces now available for rent in Piedmont - Oakland for all modalities of the healing and creative arts at Terra's Temple!

We are currently looking to fill several spaces with exciting events, workshops, regular classes etc. at our brand new healing arts space in the East Bay.

We are especially interested in hosting:

Yoga Instructors
Pilates Instructors
Healing Arts Workshops
Green Workshops
Creative Arts
Massage Therapists
Therapeutic themed events
Rituals & Rights of Passage

Terra's Temple

Do you have an interest in social justice and community organizing?

Come volunteer with
Just Cause Oakland!

Who we are: Just Cause Oakland is a membership-based organization building a powerful voice for Oakland's low-income tenants and workers. Our mission is to create a just and diverse city and region by organizing Oakland residents to advocate for housing and jobs as human rights, and to mobilize for policies that produce social and economic justice in low-income communities of color. You can find more information on our work at www.justcauseoakland.org.

Who we want: We are looking for reliable, flexible volunteers with a commitment to racial and economic justice to help support our work organizing against displacement and gentrification. We love volunteers with some experience in community-based organizations, but are also committed to providing training and support to first-timers as well.

Volunteer opportunities include: Giving rides, administrative support (including data entry, copies, helping the office run smoothly, etc) campaign research, tech support, media tracking, fundraising, Spanish translation and interpretation (native Spanish speakers especially appreciated), and more! We hope that volunteers will make a commitment of 6 - 8 months and be able to do between 2 - 4 hours of work a week. Most activities will fall on Monday through Friday, but Saturday events and activities are also fairly frequent.

Interested? Contact us at victory@justcauseoakland.org

World Premiere of movie based on Cartoonist Jesse Reklaw

Hi,
I'm an Oakland filmmaker and I have a film making its world premiere at the Mill Valley Film Festival. It's called "Compound Eye" and it centers around a cartoonist who draws a controversial comic strip depicting the World Trade Center rebuilt as an IHOP with two stacks of pancakes rising high into the sky, and how it affects his roommate who is trying to quietly run a pirate radio station out of his basement. The movie stars Fausto Caceres (from the radio show, Shirley and Spinoza) and Jesse Reklaw (the cartoon, "Slow Wave"), and uses their real lives and weaves them into a fictional story. It's entirely set in the East Bay and it needs your support at the festival.

Go to www.compoundeyemovie.com for info and a trailer.

The screenings are:
Sunday, Oct. 7 at 5:30pm at the CineArts@Sequoia theater in Mill Valley
Sat. Oct. 13 at 2:45pm at the Rafael Film Center in San Rafael.

Tickets can be purchased at www.mvff.com (search "Compound Eye")
Please support local filmmaking!

picnicking in the park

This saturday I want to have a picnic in the park for my birthday, but I'm not sure where to go.
Normally I would go to some place in Golden Gate, but I've decided that I really want this one to be in the east bay.
Two suggestions that were given to me were Tilden and Joaquin Miller.
I don't really know either of these parks very well.
Do you have suggestions of a good spot in either for picnicking and hanging out? Possibly a spot with a bbq grill? (though not necessary)
Do you have any other park suggestions?
If there was one near public transit that would be cool, though not entirely necessary as there are some folks with cars.

Thanks for your help!

Hi,

A friend and I need a place to go for a late lunch (2pmish) Saturday. We'd like it to have a patio and a bar, and it must be vegetarian-friendly (my friend doesn't eat "anything with a face"). Oakland, Hayward, Alameda, and San Leandro are where we can go. Also not to pricey - less than $10 for entrees.

Thanks

Don't store at Emeryville Public Storage

I'm helping a friend get the word out:

My husband and I would like to alert you about the Public Storage Facility on 6501 Shellmound Street, Emeryville, California, 94608. We stored our entire household contents there in November of 2006 after selling our house in preparation for our move to Portland.

On February 14, 2007, we went to our unit and found that we had been burglarized two weeks earlier. Eleven units had been broken into in December 2006, and then 27 more units in February 2007. We were not notified of the burglaries, though the caretaker George said he checked every unit and called renters who had been hit. No one that was not burglarized was notified and there were no postings alerting renters of the events.

Our lock had not been cut. The bolts to the roll down doors are made of cheap aluminum and ours was snipped. All of our family dishes, the contents of our entire kitchen, 4 large bins of power tools, and 13 musical instruments were taken, as well as personal decorative and family items. Many things were not worth a lot of money but are completely irreplaceable.

Additionally, we were called by the Emeryville Police Department in May 2007 to come to Public Storage because stolen boxes were found in an empty unit. The caretaker George discovered them, and said they had shown up two weeks before. This indicates that the stolen goods are likely stored at the Facility, and still may be. Public Storage will not authorize a search of the facility, and the Police Department did not return calls to discuss this latest development.

When we initially filed our police report, the Emeryville Police Department described Public Storage as "a joke" to us, saying they get broken into regularly - numerous times a year.

George denies this. When we asked him what Public Storage would be doing about this, he said that 'Corporate' will not let him lock the buildings down at night, nor will they install security cameras, or apparently do anything to help.

To give you an idea of the laxness of the security, there is a door that is locked to the public, but one only needs to hold it gently to not let it close all the way, and it stays propped open, and will not latch. On almost every visit to Public Storage, we have found this door open - including after hours. All storage units are accessible to the public. The large buildings containing the smaller storage units have no locking doors. Elevators are left on after hours and are also not locked down.

If you are already storing there, and you do not have a roll down door, please take care anyway. We found many of the regular doors have cheap hinges that face out into the hall. To completely remove the door, you need only a flathead screwdriver. Locks are useless there. The buildings are empty almost every time we go there.

The moral of this story is: Caution! Make sure to do your homework before you store your things in a storage facility! There are storage facilities close by in Oakland and Berkeley that have great security (cameras, no entry without signing in in-person, effective lock-down hours, main buildings are locked at night, insurance policies reimburse for full amount in event of burglary) which we only learned after the fact. This was our own mistake in a big way. Had we done better research and read our insurance policy more closely, we would not be in this situation.

The Emeryville PD, and Public Storage and George have done nothing to the minimum to help us. The entire experience is a huge disappointment and pain in the ass. We are both very sad at the loss of some things that were important to us. In the future we will not store them in a facility if it can be helped.

We have filed complaints with the Better Business Bureau and are posting on-line.

We urge you to take your storage business elsewhere.

Shipyard art compound under attack by City

We really need help on this, the city has given us no time to deal with these problems, we are going to start getting fined 2,500 a day starting tomrrow. The firemarshal is being really unreasonable.
This situation has allready resulted in the destruction of the Shipyard as a art concern in berkeley. They drove out the Crucible and now they are after us. For crying out loud the fire marshal says the SOLAR PANELS are a fire hazard. We at this time just need time to get out and they do not seem to even want to give us that.
I am not shure who to call, but the city Managers office is 510-981-7000 if enough people call they might back off enough to at least let us leave.
This is really impacting Neverwas Haul, and The Mechabolic project. Both of which are based at the shipyard.

This just posted by Jim.

(written on lovely off-grid juice once again served up by the LAG).

we have talked further with the fire marshall. he is very serious
about enforcement and fines. there is no wiggle room on their
demands. he is saying unequivocally he will write a 2500 dollar fine
tomorrow if his conditions are not met.

furthermore, the more we review what they are asking for, and the
manner in which they have cornered us from all possible directions, it
is clear they have decided they do not want this facility here. we
can speculate as to why they have encouraged and tolerated us for
years, and worked with us to make it legal, but now have hit in the
most brutal of manner. maybe the berkeley bowl across the street is
the cataylst. maybe simply our expansion into the new building.

but whatever the case, all professionals are agreeing that berkeley
has no interest in working with us further, and we have no possibility
for any sort of successful legalization with them. in short, we
cannot win here. but that does not mean that we cannot win largely
elsewhere.

with such in mind, i am currently negotiating other spaces outside the
city of berkeley where we might quickly move all our shop containers
so that work can continue for the summer build season.

Getting home from SF is going to be problematic for some time. How will you get around it?

I live in Hayward so go to SF via 92, but I don't have to go to SF very often. I work in Alameda. I wonder how my usual drive will be impacted (I get on and off at Broadway, and leave work at 4pm)? I guess I will decide tomorrow whether to BART.

Passport Photos

I need to renew my passport to go to Mexico in February. I just called the UPS Store and the fee is $13.95. WTF?!? Is that a standard price? Can I get prints made of a picture of me I take and cut them down to 2"X2"? If I can't, do you have a suggestion of where I can go?

Note that if you're thinking about traveling outside the US, there are a lot of place syou'll need a passort fater Jan. 1 that you didn't used to. This is from yesterday's SF Chronicle:

Pressing need for passports

If you’re planning a flight or cruise to Canada, the Caribbean or Mexico in January, the clock is ticking if you don’t already have a passport.

By Dec. 31, air and sea travelers to those destinations (plus Bermuda and Panama) will *need* a passport to re-enter the United States. A driver’s license and birth certificate will no longer suffice, except *for* the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

The official processing time *for* a passport by mail is six weeks, but it can take eight to 10 weeks — or potentially longer — during periods of peak demands. This year has seen an unprecedented increase jump in requests, according to the Associated Press, with the State Department expecting to issue 13 million *passports* — 3 million more than the last fiscal year.

Although January through July is the traditional high season *for* *passports*, due to spring and summer travel, the new regulation is expected to increase fall and winter applications. Demand could also remain high next year, since starting Dec. 31, 2007, border crossings by land will also require *passports*.

Only about 25 percent of Americans have current, valid *passports*, according to the Associated Press.

The State Department’s travel Web site, travel.state.gov <http://travel.state.gov>, has information on the new requirements and where to apply or renew a passport. You can also call the U.S. National Passport Information Center at (877) 487-2778.

The San Francisco Passport Agency, at 95 Hawthorne St., only serves people traveling within 14 days or in *need* of foreign visas; they must also make an appointment, by calling (877) 487-2778. The agency is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

*For* ages 16 and up, new passport fees are $97, excluding the cost of photos; *for* younger travelers, $82. Renewals, good *for* 10 years, are $67. Professional expediting services, which can reduce the turnaround time to as little as 48 hours, can double the price.

I don't think a friend realizes the stress she's putting on her larynx. She seems to lose her voice often, from cheering, shouting, and speaking in a voice loud enough to be heard over music (she's a dance teacher). She doesn't need a coach to learn how to sing, but how to speak in a way that protects her voice. I don't want her to sound like a lifelong smoker when she's 30. Can you help?

Hi, I'm a bridesmaid for my brother's wedding in mid February and I got my dress yesterday and of course it needs alterations. The place my future SIL has recommended is way the hell out on 28th Ave. in SF, though reportedly affordable. I'm looking for something a little more local. Got any suggestions?

For the record, I'll need the skirt shortened, the spaghetti straps shortened, and the bodice, which is boned on the sides, taken in, especially around the chest part (I'm kind of busty, but the top of the dress is designed stupidly). It's not a bad dress, it's just that the sizing at the shop was whack - pretty typical, as anyone who's been a BM knows.

Is anyone aware of where organizations go to feed homeless individuals in Berkeley and/or in the East Bay? I'm part of an organization that cooks and feeds homeless in the East Bay. Currently, we go to People's Park in Berkeley the first Sunday of the month. We'd like to be reaching more people. Please contact me if you have any suggestions about this...and suggestions about places to get food donations!

Namaste,

I'm a rabbi in the East Bay, and I run an organization called JGate that welcomes people who want to connect more to Jewish life. We're going to have a Shabbat dinner. I want to invite anyone who's looking to make Jewish connections, or just to have a plesant dinner with good conversation, community, and food!

Here's the info. Please get in touch with me if you want to learn more, or to RSVP.

Warm regards,
Bridget

Shabbat Dinner at JGate
Friday, August 11, 6:30 PM

Welcome Shabbat, day of rest, day of community! We'll share a potluck dinner (dairy), light candles, sing songs, say blessings, and enjoy each other's company.

All are welcome to this evening of laughter and food at JGate`s home next to El Cerrito Plaza and BART station.

Space is limited! Contact Rabbi Bridget Wynne at JGate, (510) 559-8140, or rabbiwynne@earthlink.net, to make a reservation and get directions and your food assignment.

JGate: Your Gateway to Jewish Life reaches out to Jews, their families, and others who seek connections to Jewish life and community. We welcome you to Shabbat dinners and holiday celebrations, salons on Judaism and social justice, Jewish study sessions, and rabbinic mentoring. We are ready to help you find your "home" in the Jewish community.

How berkeley can you be?" Here's how berkeley I can be.

Declaration of separation. Old left Vs. New left.

This parade, and the ensuing attention it receives, is a perfect example of why the left is not taken seriously in the United States.

I said it.
There was a day when the socialist party, was taken so seriously, that people listened to everything they said. The unions as well.
And when an environmentalist spoke, it too was listened to. Even leftists with a flair for total humor (Abbie Hoffman, who I knew, and Jerry Rubin) were quoted, and their ideas regarding western culture were taken as a serious threat to the status quo of the day.

What happened?
They happened.
The petty bourgeois special-interest groups, who successfully splintered the unity of the left here in Berkeley over 30 years ago.
They in turn gave rise to an even more scary sub-culture, which I call the "Dionysian radicals"
Groups of upper-class, "intellectuals" who used the hard-earned progress of the left, to promote such trivial "revolutionary" activities, as

Sex with children (nambla)
Public nudity (breasts not bombs)
The promotion of drugs
"free love" (read sex with minors, who you first get stoned then fuck)
"Space brotherhood realian existence concepts"
Unprotected bath house sex during the height of the aids crisis (I was there. we protested against. were called "fascists" for our concerns)
Tenants rights (once a very noble idea. now a way to rip people off while you live on their property)
Anarchy ( while living under the protection of an army)
And a general overall idea that anyone, anywhere, at any time could be called "oppressed" "downtrodden" and "a victim of society" anytime they claimed they were.

I watched as this destroyed the left, made us a laughing stock of the world, ruined the progress that came from fighting, protest, and bloodshed, and also alienated us from the rest of the country, who more than anyone in the world needed to hear the message of social change. And all due to the superior, condescending, rude, hostile, and alienating manner of these people who claimed to be "the left", "progressive" "revolutionary" and "struggling"

Insults about States, city offices, police, military, religions, races, beliefs, and conventions were thrown around at the drop of a hat, and anytime someone was rightly insulted by our "leftist convictions" we dismissed them as "fascists" "uneducated" "racists" and "imperialists"
Many of these people were the ones who truck in our food, police our cities, run the government structure, and also teach our children, and work all manner of dead end jobs to pay for their, and our children's welfare. These are the people socialism was meant to reach. The working masses. We failed. Badly
The ones doing the insulting never represented me. they never represented the Black Panther party, Nor the Raza movement, Nor the socialist party, nor the Peace and Freedom Party, Nor the Unions, Nor the people of this city, who died, and were defamed, and ruined in a struggle between us and The FBI, then under the leadership of a notoriously evil J. Edgar Hoover, who spent millions of dollars in the COINTELPRO program.
It is not a fucking bedtime story, people. And every time someone who is not from here, (like 60% of the so-called "leftist progressives" in Berkeley) uses those examples to justify a "party, do whatever you want, sex, drugs, fuck you if you don't agree" attitude, I see the fallen.

James Rector
Kent State
Black panthers
Killed Civil right's workers
beaten, tear gassed, and killed protesters
American Indian Movement
And many others, who were the ones who paid in blood, and with their lives, so that this group of upper-class, self-hating, white "intellectuals" could now claim to represent the struggle of the people, the lower class, and what were then called "the lumpen masses".

Shameful, disrespectful, dishonest, and self-centered, an experience has this been for me and others who were there, sacrificed, and NEVER claimed to represent "the people" (NO one should go throwing that phrase around lightly"

Cleaning house:
I tell you now, Until we purge our ranks of tinfoil-hat wearing, public nudity-loving, dope loving, and self-centered, orgiastic, pseudo-spiritual, and pseudo-activist partiers, (Burning man people, are you listening?) many of whom were also proven to be working for the FBI in the 60's and 70's as agent provocateurs, we will never, ever, have a "movement" that can affect any real, valuable, constant social change.

Examples: see the conservative guy's site http://www.zombietime.com for examples of people claiming to be leftist, at everyone's expense.
Note the pictures of one guy with a sign saying "fuck middle America" (neither I nor anyone I know can identify him as a local to SF or Berkeley) and signs like "we're better off without the WTC" and other "radical" slogans.
Cowards. Provocateurs. Showboats. Grandstanders. Hubris. Cruelty.
You do not now, and never did represent the struggle s of the people, the lower classes, or the left.
Do I agree with the government? Hell no. I hate the government.
But I love my people.
Americans. Many of whom did not have the benefit of a worldly education as I did, even being homeless, and alone for much of my life.
It was these same kinds of people, when stirred to action, that successfully fought and defeated the British crown, establishing this pluralistic society.
And now, the "left" insults, and alienates the very people we were supposed to educate and bring into the fold with logic, honesty, and brotherhood, (read sisterhood if it suits you better) The masses of hardworking people who for no other reason than their upbringing, and brainwashing, are very ignorant at present to they government they support. Yes, they need education. Yes, they can be insulting. Yes they can be fucking insufferable, and mean, and racist. This makes no difference. THEY ARE THE ONES WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE REACHING.
Singing to the choir means nothing. Like an anti Klan rally in Berkeley, after the Klan was run out of here 25 years ago, exercises in self-congratulation, and self glorification, are shameful mutations of what once was meaningful social change.

Something that would be revolutionary at this time would be for these people to put down the dope, and the parties, and the total immersion in cultures they do not understand, that often want nothing to do with them, and start reaching out to their kind.
White, black, Latino, Native and Asian American, middle-class people, and lower-middle class people who do not mean to offend with their political ignorance. People who work their whole lives through. When I can see that respect again, and see a REAL open-mindedness, and REAL compassion towards people who are different from you, no matter whether they are above your or below in class, no matter what color they are, and no matter what their beliefs are, THEN and only then, will we, the left, be living up to what our founders envisioned for us all. A greater level of understanding, and higher function of the human spirit, with total equality as its goal.
Leftism is a SPIRITUAL idea. Do not profess "global love and peace" while you are locally insulting and hostile towards anything that currently suits your fancy. THAT is a sign of ruling class, dilettante, mental and social laziness.

I am ashamed of us. Seriously. During the party, the torch that was meant to be passes was dropped, unceremoniously in the mud, and to be truthful it has not been picked up by many.

Let's pick it up again.

Let this diatribe serve as notice, of formal separation, ideologically, spiritually, mentally, and socially, between myself, and the False "left" may we never be confused for one another ever again. However, even if we are not on the same side ideologically, when I meet my people, and you are all my people, I will show respect, even if we do disagree, and there will be the peace. For me at least.

Help, I can't find my favorite beauty supply store!

It used to be up by the big Long's Drugs on 51st (Pleasant Valley) then they moved to SHattuck just north of University. I went by there many months ago and discovered they had closed! I've discussed this with a few other product whores, false eyelash junkies, hair-color addicts and they were equally panicked. I'm looking for a good beauty supply that has all the brands of all the funky hair dyes in addition to the salon brands, great selection of false eyelashes, all the tools and clips and foils and scissors for the hair dresser, and a great selection of shampoos and conditioners. Most of the beauty supply places in Oakland cater to the woman of color, understandably, but that doesn't meet my needs! Can you help a girl out?

thanks!
Valentina

Need to lease office space for non-profit

Hi there,

StandUp For Kids (a national nonprofit that does outreach to homeless youth) is in need of an office space in downtown Berkeley. As the new regional trainer I am starting from scratch setting up an office in the Northern California.

I need a small office to rent for under $800 a month. My ideal situation would be to share a floor with other companies but with my own private office. I would love to have it be more community minded because being locked up all by myself in an office might drive me crazy!

If you don't know of a specific location but have suggestions on where to look (other than craigslist and the Tribune) I would greatly appreciate it!

Cheap big event space for rent?

Does anyone know of a cheap multipurpose room type space for rent in the East Bay?

It would be for an event similar in size and needs to an indoor garage/clothing sale, so it would need to hold a fair number of people, and bags and racks of clothes. Say, larger than 75 person legal max capacity.

Pluses would be ability to sell food and drink, or divided area(s) or separate room(s) for smaller classes and workshops. Something like a school gym/lunchroom would be ideal.

Thanks!

This is a fun weekend class for couples or individuals who would like to try their hand at making glass mosaics. No experience is necessary but returning students are welcome, too. Institute of Mosaic Art instructor, Tammy Lee, will provide students with a solid foundation that will allow them to leave with a beautiful 12" x 12" glass mosaic for interior display and the skills to re-apply what they learn to future projects.

Cost of this class is $165 and it is worth every penny. Class focuses on designing for glass mosaics, introduction to different types of glass tesserae, surfaces suitable for glass mosaic, glass tools, cutting and shaping techniques, lay patterns, fixatives and appropriate applications. The only think students need bring is a rotary cutting tool FOR GLASS. Don't have one? You can pick one up at any stained glass shop or on site at Mosaic Studio Supply.

Does the East Bay need another mall? What do you think?

Find out about it, go to the Albany city hall meetings and let your opinion be shared.
UPCOMING EVENTS

Thursday 3/2 7:30 PM Waterfront Committee Meeting, 1000 San Pablo
City Hall

Some recent info. Please FWD. along:

TAKING THE INITIATIVE (from the Stop the Mall Newsletter)

On Monday, February 6th, members of CAS, CESP, and the Sierra Club
presented a draft of the initiative to protect the waterfront to the
City Council for their information and feedback. Once again our
stalwart supporters turned out in large numbers. Thanking you.

Main features of the proposed draft initiative include a setback
from the waterline to protect waterfowl, allow for expansion of the
dunes behind the beach, and buffer from any inland development that
would replace lost revenue after the racetrack moves to Dixon
Downs. A committee of citizens would be selected to oversee a two-
year community planning process to develop a Specific Plan for the
entire waterfront that ultimately would be voted on in accordance
with Measure C.

City Council members offered suggestions regarding selection and
composition of the citizen planning commission, funding
(Councilmember Lieber suggested a portion of the City's proposed new
parcel tax should include a small element for waterfront planning),
and replacement of revenues should GGF move to Dixon Downs.

Suggestions from the City Council, Let it Be, Five Creeks,
Sustainable Albany, Audubon, and others are currently under
consideration.

ROAD SHOW REDUX

Last week, Rick Caruso pitched his plans to the Parks & Recs
Commission on Wednesday, and the Traffic & Safety Commission on
Thursday. He used the same slides that Matt Middlebrook, Caruso VP,
presented at the Waterfront Committee meeting a week or so before,
with only one change: Mr C determined that a hotel would not be
commercially feasible, and the hotel is now out of the project.

GOT PARK?

At Parks & Recs very little was mentioned about parks and open
space. Go figure. Because Mr C is required by law to dedicate a
portion of the project to parkland, he'd provide the bare minimum of
2.25 acres (a whopping 2% of GGF). Then the commission's pro-
developers, Alvin Riffer and Geoff Pillar, lobbed softballs to Mr.
C. Only later did they admit to hosting private coffees in each of
their homes to showcase the mall project (Riffer twice).

WHAT TRAFFIC, WHAT PARKING?

At Traffic & Safety Mr C's presentation did not include one single
mention of traffic or parking. In his overhead slides, there are
still only blurry blobs where the multi-story pay-to-park structures
might go.

Shoreline access? Mr C offered that the distance from the closest
pay-to-park structure to the Bulb would require a hike of ¼ mile
each way.

Car trips? Given that the Santa Anita sister project will attract
30,000 new trips per day. Mr C under questioning suggested 15,000
trips per day for the Albany mall, which is in addition to current
GGF trips.

Traffic Gridlock? Mr C solves the problem with Timed Traffic Lights.

Parking Garages? At one space per million dollars of revenue +
resident parking = 2,400. Restaurants require 16 spaces per $1MM.
And what about GGF, which today has 4,000 spaces in the north
parking lot alone? The pay-to-park structures will also need to
replace the South parking lot at Gilman (soon to be ballfields), the
North parking lot (where the mall would go), the Point Fleming and
Horseman's parking lots (pocket park), and overflow parking on the
Plateau (burrowing owl habitat).

CALTRANS TO THE RESCUE

Seems there is very limited access to the mall from westbound I-80.
When asked, Mr C did not offer to pay for a new westbound I-80
entrance at Buchanan St; however, he would try to steer State
traffic bonds from CalTrans to pay for the cost at $20 – 25MM. (A
prudent reader might consider doubling that.)

NO TV, NO P&Z

The Planning and Zoning Commission special meeting for 2/22 has been
postponed until after such time that Mr C submits an actual
application.

LEAVE NO STONE UNTURNED

The City Council on 2/6 seemed to say that Mr C's traveling road
show would not be given access to the public interest channel 33,
unless CAS/CESP/Sierra club was given equal time. But, it turns out
that "some lady" requested, and the meeting subsequently was filmed
without equal time for CAS. Who is that lady, but former
assemblyperson, Dion Aroner, now a paid Caruso consultant.

In like manner, a helpful lawyer from Morrison & Foerster was
introduced to lend a helping hand to the City to guide us through
the EIR process. Upon examination (by Ed Fields), this gentleman
turns out to be none other than the very same attorney who
represented Caruso in his appellate court case to litigate the right
to build a mall in Glendale.

I have 3 extra tickets for the Mutaytor tonight (original companion is sick); ideally would like to catch a ride from Berkeley too. If you don't know them, they're an amazing performance troupe, started at Burning Man and now getting a lot of buzz even in the, um, regular world. Please reply here or call 510-847-9007.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Oakland Alameda

Hi all! Just thought I'd post something up about the BJJ school we have here in Oakland right off of the 880 frwy. We're super close to the Park St. bridge leading into Alameda.

Anyway, if you're at all interested in finding a martial arts academy where you'll not only learn a practical martial art form, you'll also have fun, get in shape, hang out with cool people, and learn from some qualified instructors, then come on in and try out a free class.

Our school is about providing students a SAFE, non-abusive, atmosphere where they can learn the art of BJJ (it's like wrestling but with joint locks and choke holds instead of pins) without feeling like they were beaten up after every class.

For more information, check out our website at www.opendoorbjj.com or do a search in Yahoo Groups for 'opendoorbjj'

Thanks!

Transmission Jazz with Colin Stetson THIS Saturday 2/4/06

TRANSMISSION is the avant groove jazz band fronted by sax player Colin Stetson. Colin has performed on the David Letterman show, and he and bassist Eric Perney have appeared on numerous CDs including the Tom Waits CDs "Alice" and "Blood Money".

Colin now lives in New York, so this is one of those rare semi-annual shows for the Transmission Trio. This will be their only Eastbay show this trip.

Transmission Trio and Transmission Quintet (adding guitarist Roger Riedlbauer and trumpeter Ara Anderson) will perform on this show. You've GOT to catch these guys if you want to hear some of the best jazz performers anywhere. Seriously.

Opening for Transmission is/are the BOXCAR SAINTS, a bluesy band fronted by Dave Hudson (recently profiled in a cover story in the SF Weekly) singing about hard life experiences in the Midwest. (And you think you've had it rough...)

Quotes about Transmission:

"...Theirs is a swaggering, unruly gait; a mini-Mingus band, blues and roots and lord knows what else." -- BBC

"...Transmission blows audiences away with high energy music that nearly defies description."-- The Current

"Transmission Trio's avant-garde fusion of improvisational or "free" jazz, hip hop and rock reeks of uber-cool, smoke-filled lounges where well-cocktailed cats and kittens talk art, existentialism and other such heavy things." --SF Examiner

TOU

Incredibly draconian and perhaps the most censurious of all the online communities'.

Flagging

My best friend posted pics of US soldiers who had died in Iraq, and maimed Iraq civilians. The former were flagged, and removed, no notice given or discussion offered. The horribly maimed Iraq citizens weren't deemed offensive, apparently. I wonder if the staffer who removed the pics looked at the pics to either side of the soldiers, or even read their own TOS?

New format

It sucks. It's just designed to net more views of different ads, not ease of use or fun. Nothing has been changed even though every comment I've read -- and there are a lot -- has been that the Tribe community hates it.

I had hung around hoping that something new would show up to take its place, but can't stand this anymore. Tribe is now administrered by uncaring, unresponsive, beaten-down, passive-aggressive staff and the self-righteous fanatics who have time to flag, flagrantly feeding their egos. There has been no improvement or even a slight halt to its downward slide. This is not something I want to contribute to anymore. My thanks to all the folks I used to talk with…and I hope ya'all will think on whether it's worth it to support Tribe as it is now.

MacHomer - The Simpsons Do Macbeth

I wanted to let everyone know about a rather funny show we’re producing

MacHomer – which is a one man show in which the story of Macbeth is told using over 50 voices from the Simpsons.

It’s pretty brilliant. We brought it to town in 2003 and it sold out quickly, so if you’re into the Simpsons, I would hop on it.

It’s Jan. 24th – Jan. 29th at the Roda Theater in Berkeley.

You can make reservation of watch some video clips of the show at

http://www.calshakes.org/v4/2006/machomer.html

Hope everyone is doing great.
Wierzynski (from Poland by way of the South), this is one of the few bands I've seen that is good right out of the box. A newish band, but they know exactly what they're

doing. Lech is fascinating on trumpet because many people say he's channeling Louis Armstrong.

SPOOTNIK makes a triumphant return to the Stork stage. If you took a jazz/rock band, added Russian songs and backed it up by 1950s girl group backup singers, you

probably wouldn't be too far off. It's music unlike anything you've ever heard, well-executed, lively, and fun.

This will definitely be a good night of music.

MY EMAIL HAS SUDDENLY CHANGED. For unexplained reasons, Yahoo has deleted my account, davidkayepromo@yahoo, so PLEASE DON'T USE IT. I have no idea
why they won't restore it and I can't reach them for an answer. So in the meanwhile, use davidkayepromo2@yahoo.com.

NEWS: Local band makes good. One of the bands I've booked in the past and I'm especially fond of, Cari Lee and the Saddle-Ites, has since appeared at Opryland,

opened for Brooks & Dunn at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, and Cari Lee herself has been tapped to play lead in a musical stage play about legendary

country star Rose Maddox.

Just goes to show you that if you go to one of my shows you'll see some great acts before the Big Guys snatch them away to fame and fortune.

This Tuesday -- THIS Tuesday, it'a another fabulous night of interesting music performed by musicians you've probably never heard before -- or have you?

TRANSMISSION
This is the avant groove jazz band the other jazz performers go out to see. They're sort of on the Thomas Chapin axis of jazz and with a lot of original tunes as well.

Transmission consists of hot bassist Eric Perney on stand-up bass (if you collect any CDs at all you probably have some of his tracks in your collection), Tim Strand on drums/percussion, Roger Riedlbauer on guitar, and Aaron Novik on clarinets. Added to this bill are Pat Farrell on Rhodes and accordion. A SUPER SHOW!

Transmission Website: http://www.transmissionquartet.com

ZOYRES EASTERN EUROPEAN WILD FERMENT
This is a brass band that has its roots in Balkan (Bulgarian, Croatian, etc) and klezmer music (Jewish party music), but then goes off into its own directions, doing riffs on stuff that is at once familiar and alien. Fascinating band. Led by sax player Mike Perlmutter on saxes, with Olivier Hamant on clarinets, Liam Staskawicz playing trombone, and Eddie Pollard with drums and percussion
